I’m playing this tomorrow, along with a few other Beatles songs, for an event benefitting 2E (twice-exceptional) kids. Twice-exceptional means a person tests exceptionally high in intelligence, and also has something like ADD or autism that would traditionally be considered a “learning disability.” These kids sometimes get kicked aside and have their confidence shattered in school, because a “sit down, shut up and watch 6 hours of lectures a day” approach doesn’t work for them.

The narrative of historical figures like Einstein, who was kicked out of school because he couldn’t pay attention, suggests that more than a few of our civilization’s biggest contributors were 2E.

Anyway, I never really knew the lyrics to the song before now. Wow.

Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream

It is not dying

It is not dying

Lay down all thought, surrender to the void

It is shining

It is shining

That you may see the meaning of within

It is being

It is being

That love is all and love is everyone

It is knowing

It is knowing

That ignorance and hate may mourn the dead

It is believing

It is believing

But listen to the color of your dreams

It is not leaving

It is not leaving

So play the game “Existence” to the end

Of the beginning

Of the beginning

Of the beginning…

“Surrender to the void - it is shining”??

Sometimes the late 60s feel like the distant future.
